Limestone Head of Buddha

石灰石佛頭像

Northern Qi Dynasty (550-577)

Height 6 1/2 inches, 16,5cm.

The long, oval head is sensitively carved. The features, well proportioned, emphasize the length of the face, with a single incised arched line to define the brow, a curve elegantly answered in the gentle upward sweep of each heavy lidded eye, the long, narrow nose rounds at the tip just over the well defined philtrum above the small but full lips of the mouth. The chin softly rounded, as are the cheeks on either side of which are the well-formed ears, the hair represented by rows of flat, curls of hair, each with a spiral radiating outward from the center, cover the dome of the usnisa.
